Apple Patent Could Shut Down Your Smartphone in Certain Areas

Using your Smartphone could soon become a lot more complicated than you ever thought. In late August, Apple was granted a patent on a technology to be placed in Smartphones that will make them useless when they are inside areas that have been targeted as being too sensitive for video and photos. It will not just keep the Smartphone from being allowed to take photo of video though. The technology will actually force the phone go completely to sleep, making it impossible to send or receive calls or texts, or use any apps, like Facebook and Twitter.

There are definitely some upsides to this type of technology. You would never have to deal with that obnoxious person that answers their phone in the movie theater, and teachers won’t have to worry about dishonest students using their phones to cheat. However, it would also make it impossible to catch acts on video such as police violence, allowing heinous acts to go undocumented and ultimately, unpunished.

When pressed for more information, Apple did produce a rather reasonable explanation for the necessity of this technology:

“As wireless devices such as cellular telephones, pagers, personal media devices and smartphones become ubiquitous, more and more people are carrying these devices in various social and professional settings. The result is that these wireless devices can often annoy, frustrate, and even threaten people in sensitive venues. For example, cell phones with loud ringers frequently disrupt meetings, the presentation of movies, religious ceremonies, weddings, funerals, academic lectures, and test-taking environments.”

Only time will tell if this technology will prove to be helpful or harmful. There seem to be plenty of positives as well as negatives. What do you think about this new technology from Apple? Comment below and share your thoughts.
