Facebook has endured a rough year. After the Facebook IPO crashed and burned, recently dipping below $20 a share, Facebook could use a win. On his blog today, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had a grand announcement for his followers: Facebook has reached One Billion Users. This is a proud moment for the Facebook team, but there are certainly quite a few detractors that wonder how many of those Facebook accounts are genuine.
To be clear, there are officially one billion active Facebook user accounts. This does not mean that there are actually one billion people using Facebook, but this also does not account for the many inactive accounts that Facebook has. I, myself, once had two Facebook accounts, one for friends and one for games. Yes, sadly, I once fell into the Farmville fad. So, if you think about it in terms of every active Facebook user maybe having two separate accounts, then in all actuality, there are only half a billion people on Facebook. Of course, this isn’t exactly how it works. Some people have 10 Facebook accounts, while others stick to just one. The fact is, there is no way to truly know how many real people are on Facebook. What they do know, is that one billion accounts are active.
On his blog, Zuckerberg wrote, “This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month. If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”
As of July 2012, Facebook only had 955 million active users, so it is actually quite remarkable that they were able to add 45 million new users in just a few months.
