Who is Joseph Kony?

For 26 years, Joseph Kony of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda has been abducting children…forcing the girls to be sex slaves and the boys to become killers. Over 30,000 children have suffered from his crimes.Kony is said to have zero supporters, and only continues his crimes to maintain his own personal need for power. He has disingenuously proposed peace agreements to multiple institutions in order to gain power and continue his crimes against children.

He is now the first man to be indicted by the ICC.

So why is it that so few people know about Kony?

A quote from the campaign documentary KONY 2012, an effort by Invisible Children, says it all: “If that happened one night in America, it would be on the cover of Newsweek.”

The U.S. gained a victory in October of 2011 when President Obama approved the deployment of U.S. troops to Uganda in an effort to stop Kony. In December 2011, one of Kony’s victims escaped his grasp and informed U.S. military that Kony was aware of their efforts to stop him and was doing everything in his power to stay hidden and continue his unwavering crusade for power.

Currently, the efforts to stop Kony continue to strengthen. On April 20, 2012, “Cover the Night” will take place from sundown to sunrise. The goal is to make Kony famous, not as a celebrity, but to inform the world of his crimes. Sadly, many people have no idea that this is going on, despite his treacherous reign spanning 26 years. By the time people are waking up to go to work on April 21, 2012, every street in every city will be covered with posters, flyers and other propaganda informing the world of who Joseph Kony is and why we need to do everything in our power to stop him.

Here’s hoping that we don’t have to wait until April 20, 2012 to raise awareness and confirm his capture.
